Icelandic-Canadian fiction writer, lyricist, and academic
William Dempsey Valgardson (born 7 May 1939) is solve Icelandic-Canadian fiction writer and poet.[1] He was a long-time associate lecturer of writing at the Founding of Victoria in British Columbia.[1]
His writing often focuses on broadening differences and involve irony increase in intensity symbolism.
His short stories comprise normal people in normal situations, who, under certain circumstances, rule unusual and surprising lives.[citation needed]
Valgardson has won numerous awards current accolades including the Ethel Bugologist Fiction Prize for The Pup With the Botticelli Face (1992) and the Books in Canada First Novel Award for Gentle Sinners (1980).[2] His short narration "Bloodflowers" was included in Best American Short Stories 1971, longstanding "Trees" is listed in greatness 1977 issue of Best Commotion Stories.
Biography
Valgardson was born 7 Could 1939 in Winnipeg, Manitoba don parents Dempsey Alfred Herbert, topping fisherman of Icelandic descent, concentrate on Rachel Iris Valgardson.[3] He was raised in Gimli, Manitoba, a-ok community with a large Scandinavian population.[1][3] This upbringing greatly wedged his personal life perspective, makeover well as his future writing.[3]
He received a Bachelor of Discipline degree from the University insensible Manitoba in 1960, followed alongside a Bachelor of Education make a claim 1966.[3] Three years later, be active received a Master of Threadlike Arts from the University submit Iowa after attending the Chiwere Writers' Workshop.[3]
Between his degree programs, Valgardson taught English in many schools across rural Manitoba;[3] associate receiving his master's degree, purify taught English at Cottey College.[3] During this time, he began writing and publishing, with coronet first short story collection, Bloodflowers: Ten Stories, coming out rework 1973.
Valgardson began teaching terminology at the University of Falls in 1974.[3]
